Many people think that successful entrepreneurs “just know” what they are called to do and then simply follow their calling. If you ask any entrepreneur how they got started, this is rarely the reality. They will tell you their path to success and finding out what gives them joy took a while and often times was spurred by other events in their lives. For the Spurlocks, they wanted to begin building a legacy for their family and weren’t quite sure where to start. Because of their background, they were thinking generally about workforce management. They are at the beginning of their journey and thriving.

Steve and Jessica Spurlock have close ties to the payroll industry and began looking at a wide variety of businesses where they could weave in their experience. Steve was embedded in corporate America in television broadcasting where he worked with software developers to design systems to capture and feed payroll and related data to payroll processing systems. Jessica managed payroll and HR duties for some of the companies she worked for prior to switching her sights inward to home and family.
The Spurlocks became interested in franchising opportunities after looking around. It would be an ideal opportunity since Steve wanted to continue to work in broadcasting as a freelancer and Jessica was looking for options to use her talents. “The more we learned about franchising, we were really drawn to the concept versus trying to launch our own business,” stated Jessica. “We were interviewing several franchises and Payroll Vault won us over.”
With almost one year under their belt as Payroll Vault owners, they are thriving. Steve states, “Payroll was not too far of a jump for either one of us and, we are happy that we found Payroll Vault. Not even one year into our investment, and we are growing rapidly, and met our first set of goals as business owners.”
Although the Spurlocks are excelling, don’t think they are taking a break. “We believe we can surpass one hundred clients and hire an additional payroll processor,” says Jessica. And trust me, once you meet this exciting, dynamic couple, you know they will succeed!
All work-and-no-play isn’t an option for these two, either. Both bowl in USBC sanctioned leagues, own a Harley Ultra Classic Limited, live to go riding with friends or participate in rides that support charities, and are dedicated Chicago sports fans supporting the Bears, Bulls, White Sox and Blackhawks.
We can’t wait to see what they accomplish in year two!
