I heard there is a new I-9. Am I required to use it now?
The New I-9 Form
How and When to Use It
MAR 6, 2020 by KELLY, PHR
You may begin using the new form immediately, but you are not required to use the new form until May 1, 2020. That said, we recommend that you start using the new form now so that you can iron out any kinks before the grace period ends.
It is important to understand that the new form must only be used for newly hired employees and that an employer should not request that current employees with a complete, valid I-9 on file, complete another I-9 during employment, even when a new version is released.
Some background on the new form: At the end of January, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) released a new Form I-9. The new form is dated 10/21/2019. USCIS provided employers with a three-month grace period during which the old form (dated 07/17/2017) may be used until April 30th. But by May 1, 2020, only the new form should be used. The new form can be downloaded on the HR Support Center; search for Form I-9 and be sure to follow the download instructions. You can also find the form on the USCIS website.
